Designed in 1970 by legendary golf course architect Robert Trent Jones, Sr., it was one of several exceptionally fine layouts designed by Jones in that period. Incorporated in the design are many well-known trademarks of RTJ Sr. courses, including: numerous and beautifully sculptured bunkers which guard both fairway landing areas and large, undulating greens.
Designed by legendary Architect Robert Trent Jones Sr., who is known for several championship designs in California such as Mission Viejo CC, Valencia CC and Spyglass Hill in Pebble Beach, the golf course was opened for play 1971 as Murrieta Golf Club. The focal point of a proposed real estate development as well as the famed Murrieta Hot Springs Resort, Legal entanglements forced the closure of the golf course in the late 1970's. The property lay dormant until its resurrection in 1986, by local developer Bill Johnson, and was reopened as the Rancho California Golf Club. The facility immediately found itself added to several "Best Public Course" lists by various golf publications, and became a destination for golf purists throughout California. In 1994, after a 20 year planning process to acquire a Championship golf facility, the property was purchased by the Southern California Golf Association and became the "Home" golf course for its more than 130,000 members, 500 affiliate golf clubs and has hosted numerous top level competitive events including; Senior PGA Tour Qualifying, the California State Open and the CIF State Golf Championships, just to name a few.
In May of 2010, the golf course property was sold by the SCGA to an investment group whose portfolio includes, The Golf Club of California in Fallbrook California, an upscale semi-private facility. The Golf Club at La Quinta, formerly known as the Trilogy Golf Club, home to the 2003-2006 Skins Game. The Golf Club at Rio Vista and The Golf Club at Brentwood, both located in the East San Francisco Bay area. Additional holdings include the Westridge Golf Club in La Habra, and the historic Los Angeles Royal Vista Golf Club in Walnut California. All of the golf course properties are operated under the corporate umbrella known as "The Golf Clubs of California" and are committed to offering an exceptional "Golf Club" experience at all of these fine facilities. The Golf Club at Rancho California continues to host numerous SCGA events and offers reduced rates to all SCGA as well as PLGA members.

Greens were very wet an dshowed every foot print. Usually this course has been in better condition. The pin placements were totally off where they needed to be for the green conditions.

This course in under new management and as such there have been some good overall changes but the condition of the greens is poor. I say that because as I see it, considering that I've played this course for a number of years and have seen it in much better condition. The greens are extremely soft but very fast. I believe this is because of the excessive watering that is done on the course in order to save the greens during the hot months. As we've had little or no rain in months that is the only answer I can come up with as far as the softness of the greens. As for the speed, I like it, the only problem I see though is the crazy locations for the cups. You really can't put the cup location on the edge of a slope and expect anyone, regardless of handicap level to think that this is fun. No, what is is gimmicky.

Greens were super fast that day because they held a high school girls tournament there the day before, but the starter told me when I checked in.

Tough track but fair. Helps to keep the ball in the fairway and know the layout. Some very picturesque holes and elevated tees. Greens in good condition and not overly tiered. Great course for the money. Staff friendly and helpful.

Teed off about 8 AM, conditions were cold and foggy. Course was in decent shape with the greens playing pretty fast (10-12). A little course knowledge would be beneficial for putting but the course is definitely a challenge. The starter said that the driving range was closed for maintenance but it was odd that about 30 golfers were using the same facility (Golf Academy in progress).

a fair and playable course, particularly for RT Jones. The conditions have slipped since being there last year, change in ownership may be to blame. With a little TLC to fairways and cutting greens more often, an outstanding value.

A very enjoyable course. It is difficult, but to quote the designer, Robt. Trent Jones, sr.: "eminently fair". This is my home course, although I live 60 miles away. I recommend it as I have thouroughly enjoyed it.

A really nice course owned by the Southern California Golf Association. Always well kept and all features are well maintained. Would like to see a better price break for SCGA members, especially during the week.

Green were fantastic and true, about 10-11 stimp. Fairways were avg. Used to be the best course in the area, but no longer. Will return for sure; always enjoy this layout.
